The Rediscovery Of Prehistoric Platycerium Fern Andinum

By Lee Moore , The Adventurer

Every Since The British Naturalist And Adventurer , By The Name Of Spruce , Discovered This Magnificent Prehistoric Platycerium (Staghorn) Fern Species , In The 1860's , In The South American Area Of Tarapoto , Peru From That Time On Many Explorers Have Attempted To Follow The Same Trail That Spruce Had Taken In Search Of And To Rediscover This Prehistoric Platycerium Fern Species Again , Without Having Any Success . Spruce , Brought Out Of The Prehistoric Peruvian Amazon Rain Forest Jungle A Single Dried Out And (Dead) Herbarium Specimen Of This Platycerium Fern Species , Which He Later Named After The Andes Mountains , Of South America . This Platycerium (Staghorn) Fern Species Is The Only Species , Of This Genus , Known To Exist Within The American Hemisphere , A True American Staghorn Fern .

Even Though Many Searchers Had Searched For This Prehistoric Platycerium Species , For Many Years , And Failed At Every Attempt At Finding The Species The First Living Specimen Had Not Yet Been Seen By The Horticultural World Until Another Naturalist And Adventurer , That Was Not Following In Spruce's Footsteps Nor His Same Trail Just Happened To Stumbled Upon This Prehistoric Platycerium Fern Species In 1962 , Just One Hundred Years Later . That Was Me , Lee Moore , And Just Think I Was Not Even Looking For This Platycerium Fern Species . However , When It Was Known By The Plant Growers That I Was Tromping Around In The Area I Was Informed To Be On The Lookout For This Platycerium Species . I Knew Immediately What I Had Found And The Importance , Of The Discovery , When I Seen This Magnificent And Great Prehistoric Platycerium (Staghorn) Fern Andinum Species , For The First Time . I Had By Chance Picked Out A Pin Point Area , Within A Area , Almost As Large As The Entire United States Which Was The Prehistoric Amazon Jungle And This Is Where I Stumbled Upon This Prehistoric Platycerium Fern Species , Which Was Purely By Accident , In A Area Called Puccallpa Which Means Red Earth And Is Located About 200 Miles South Of Where The British Naturalist Spruce Had Originally Reported Finding The First Platycerium (Staghorn) Fern Andinum Species Near Tarapoto , Peru , Within The Tropical Rain Forest Jungle , Of Peru . I Should Have This Type Of Luck With The Lotto .

I Had Traveled To Peru A Couple Of Years Before And Just Fell In Love With The Prehistoric Amazon Jungle . In The Town Of Iquitos , Peru , Within The Amazon Rain Forest Jungle , Is Where I Decided To Build A Plant Nursery Which Is Located On The Amazon River And At That Time I Also Decided To Dedicate My Life To The Explorations Of Orchids , Bromeliads , Aroids , Ferns And Other Exotic Plant Species . The Old Icons Of The Industry , At That Time , Laughed At My Folly And Dubbed Me 'The Adventurer' A Name Which Has Stuck With Me , To This Day , I Finally Decided To Use The Name As My Logo .

In The Year Of 1962 I Finally Made The Big Leap And So I Jumped Into The Prehistoric Amazon Rain Forest Jungles Of Peru Head First , Only To Be Met With Complete Disaster And The Loss Of Everything I Had Including My Best Friend And Partner Ronnie Wagner , But That Is Another Story To Be Told . By Me Being Young And Adventuresome , At That Time , I Was Undaunted By The Negative Input And Decided To Go On Anyway Even Though I Had Just Lost My Best Friend And All Of My Supplies , Besides I Was Already In Peru . I Decided To Go On Anyway . The Exotic Plant Explorations Began As Soon As I Was Able To Get Over The Shock Of It All And Reorganize Myself .

I Quickly Made My Mark , Within The Horticultural World , With Many New And Important Discoveries , Of The Plant Species Orchids And Bromeliads And I Also Managed To Gain The Respect And Some Recognition From The Very Old Icons That Had Ridiculed Me With The Title 'The Adventurer' And This Is Partly The Reason Why I Decided To Hold Onto This Title Of The Adventurer That Had Been Given To Me , Just To Spite The Old Icons . Many Of The New Species That I Had Discovered That First Year , Within The Prehistoric Amazon Rain Forest Jungle , Have Went On To Become Major And Very Popular Commercial Plant Species That Are Being Sold On The Market Today . I Named My First Important Plant Species Discovery Of 1962 , Which Was A Tillandsia , Tillandsia Wagneriana That I Discovered Within The Great Amazon Rain Forest Jungle After My Friend "Ronnie Wagner" And Now This Tillandsia Species Is Grown And Used In Hybridization By All , Of The Major Plant Growers Around The World . Ronnie's Name Now Lives On Through This Tillandsia Plant Species . Some Of My Other Important Discoveries Of Plant Species , In My Adventures , Include Some Of The Well Known Bromeliads That Are Sold On The Market Today , Such As The Aechmea Chantinii Including The Black And Pink Goddess Clones Such As The Mooreana , Neo , Moorei , Guz , Bismarkii And The Streptocalyx Homesii . Within The Orchid Species There Are The Catasetum Moorei , Encyclia Lemorea And Cattleya Mooreana And There Are Numerous Other Species Of Both Orchids And Bromeliads That Are Of Lesser Importance . There Is Also A New Genus Of Liliaceae , By The Name Of Traubia Korsakofii That I Named After Two Friends Whom Really Supported Me In My Efforts And Finally There Is The Prehistoric Platycerium (Staghorn) Fern Species Andinum . Just Think , All Of These Fantastic Plant Species Were Discovered , Within South America's Prehistoric Amazon Tropical Rain Forest Jungles , Of Peru .

Actually , Platycerium Fern Andinum Was One Of The First Of My Important Discoveries . I Had Shipped My Old (39) Horse Power Volkswagen Van That I Had , At The Time , From Miami , Florida To The Port Of Callao , Peru . This Old Volkswagen Van Had Already Covered The Central American Highway To Panama And Back To Miami , Florida , On A Previous Adventure Of Mine . The Pan American Highway Really Turned Me On , But Nothing Could Ever Compare With What I Found Within Peru Later On . My Plan Was To Drive The Old Volkswagen Van Across The Andes Mountains To A Area Called Pucalipa And Then Ship The Van By Boat Down The Ucayalli River To A Town Called Iquitos . The Road That I Was Going To Travel On Had Just Been Carved Through The Andes Mountains Just As The Famous Pan American Highway Had Been Carved A Few Years Before , Which Had Been My First Inspiration To Drive On . A Road That Had Just Been Opened From The Coast , Of Peru , Across And Through The Andes Mountain Range To The Amazon Jungle Can Be Very Much Inviting To A Young And Intrepid Adventurer . To Accomplish This I Had To Fly , From Iquitos , Peru , Where I Was Presently Located To Lima , Callao , Clear My Old Volkswagen Van Through Customs And Then Drive Across The Andes Mountains Through An Area Where No Tourist Had Ventured Before . This Was All Part Of My Plan , Just To Explore New Territories That Were Being Opened .
