Prehistoric Platycerium Fern Bifurcatum

Prehistoric Platycerium (Staghorn) Fern Bifurcatum Is The Most Widely Distributed And Easily Found Platycerium Fern Species Of All The Epiphytic Platycerium Ferns . We At Madagascar Tropicals Feel That This Is Due To The Low Cultivational Requirements And Ease Of Getting The Species Started . This Species Can Be Found In Your Local Nursery , Which Is Unlike The Other (17) Platycerium Fern Species And Can Be Found In 2' , 4' And 6' Pots Being Cultivated In Peat Moss And Pearlite .

This Species Is Found Living And Surviving Within The Australian Bush Lands , Where There Is Very Little Or No Humidity In The Air And The Amount Of Rain Fall Per Year Is Very Low .

The Shield Fronds Of The True Platycerium Fern Bifurcatum Are Wide And Tall With Fingers At The Top Portions Upper Edges . The Fertile Fronds Are Very Narrow And Long , With Small , Long And Narrow Fingers At Its Tips And These Fertile Fronds Hang Downwards Instead Of Being Upright .

The Average Cultivating Temperatures For Prehistoric Platycerium Fern Bifurcatum Should Be Maintained Between (40) And (70) Degrees . If The Temperatures Drop Below (40) Degrees For An Extended Period Of Time The Roots , Of The Species , Can Suffer Root Freeze . At The Other End Of The Scale , When The Temperatures Rise Above (80) Degrees Slow Or No Growth In Shield Or Fertile Fronds Come Into Play . A Lot Of Humidity Is Not Needed For This Platycerium Fern Species To Grow Well , But The Species Does Require Good Air Movement , Moisture And A Little Plant Food Which Should Be Given At (1/4) Strength Per Gallon Of Water . This Makes Platycerium Fern Bifurcatum An Excellent Species For Those Just Starting A Platycerium Fern Collection And To Cultivate Out Side . The Species Does Require Filtered Sun Light Of Not Less Than 50% .

Prehistoric Platycerium Fern Bifurcatum Produces Pups Freely During The Winter Season , When The Temperatures Are Cooler And The Species Can Be Damp , But Not Wet And You Must Still Allow The Species To Dry Back A Little . This Can Be Quite Tricky In The Cultivation Of The Species , But If You Can Accomplish This Task As Time Moves On The Added Pups To The Mother Plant Causes Platycerium Fern Bifurcatum To Become One Large Massive Ball Of Plants . All Of This Takes Time , So Don't Look For It To Happen In One Or Two Years .

There Are Many Cultivars Of Platycerium Fern Bifurcatum , From New World Order To Netherlands , But Still These Cultivars , Of The Species , Are An (Excellent) Species For Those Just Beginning A Collection Of Prehistoric Platycerium (Staghorn) Ferns . With This Species You Can Become Familiar With The Watering , Feeding , Light Requirements , Pest Of Platycerium Ferns , Pup Removal , Mounting And Any Number Of Things Which Pertains To The Cultivation Of The Platycerium Fern Species . Keep In Mind That The Lack Of Information Can (Kill) Anything .

At The Nursery We Still Have Our First Prehistoric Platycerium Fern That We Started With And From Time To Time Take A Good Look At It Just To Remind Ourselves Where We Have Come From . Our First Platycerium (Staghorn) Fern Was A Bifurcatum (Cv.) Netherlands And At That Time We Thought We Had To Give The Species Humidity , A Lot Of Water And A Number Of Other Things For It To Grow Until Nature And Gaining Knowledge Showed Different . This Happened Because Of A Lack Of Information , So At That Time In Life We Were A Member Of The Walking Dead .
