Platycerium Fern Cultivation , Group 2 Continued

When Watering , With A Hose , Soak The Prehistoric Species Well By Watering The Species , Then Waiting A While And Watering Again . When Feeding The Large And Mature Platy. Ferns Fill A (1) Gallon Container , With Water And Adding A (1/4) Teaspoon Of General All Purpose Plant Food . Pour This Solution Over The Root Mass And Between The Shield Fronds . This Process Will Ensure That The Species Receives Its Proper Amount Of Feeding . Perform This Task approximately Three Times During The Summer Season . A Slow Release Formula Such As Osmocote Can Also Be Used For The Feeding Of Larger Platycerium Ferns , By Sprinkling (1) Level Teaspoon Over The Root Mass . The Slow Release Formula Will Give The Platy. Species A Little Food Each Time That The Species Is Watered . This Type Of Feeding Should Be Performed Only (1) Time Per Year .

During The Winter Season , Two Prehistoric Species Platy. Fern Holttumii And Wandae Must Completely Dry Back Before The Next Watering . Platycerium Fern Holttumii Enters A Dormancy Period In Late Fall And No Growth Will Be Produced In Its Shield Or Fertile Fronds Until Spring Arrives . If This Platycerium Fern Receives Water To Soon Root Rot Will Set In , Because The Species Posses A Built In Water Storage System To Sustain It Through This Period . At Madagascar Tropicals We Give Platy. Fern Holttumii A Very Small Amount Of Water (2) Times Or Not At All During Its Dormancy , Otherwise The Species Stays Dry Until We Can See Growth , When Spring Arrives . Platy. Fern Holttumii Only Produces Growth , From Early Spring through Mid Fall . Nature Has Given This Species The Ability To Store Moisture , Within Its Corky Shield And Fertile Fronds , Until Needed . This Species Has A Definite Seasonal Growth Pattern And Can Survive Our Winter Season , Within Its Dormancy Period Stage , With Very Little Or No Water Being Given To It .When Early Spring Arrives And Growth Can Be Seen Wait A Little While For The Species To Use Up Its Water Reserve And Then Water Well And Allow The Species To Dry Back Some And Then Water Again . Continue This Process Until Mid Fall And Then Stop Watering The Species . The Last Growth Produced By Platy. Fern Holttumii , For The Growing Season Will Be A Set Of Fertile Fronds And Only One Set Is Produced A Year . After The Fertile Fronds Are Produced And Matured In Mid Fall The Species Will Shut Down . This Is When All Watering , Of The Species , Should Stop . If These Cultivating Tips Are Followed , For Platycerium Fern Holttumii , The Species Will Grow And Survive , Within Any Controlled Environment .

Platycerium Fern Wandae Continues Producing Shield Fronds During The Winter Season , But No Fertile Fronds . This Species Produces Its Fertile Fronds In The Spring And Needs To Be Fully Mature In Order To Produce Its Second Spore Patch , Which Resembles The Species Main Spore Patch , But The Patch Is Raised And Will Not Have The Long Hanging Fingers . This Species Can Suffer From Root Rot Very Quickly , If Watered To Soon .

The Prehistoric Platycerium Fern Species Contained Within This Group Will Grow Very Well If Given The Proper Cultivation . Notice The Species Shield Frond Make Up , The Amount Of Moss Around The Root System And The Cultivating Area , Where The Species Has Been Placed To Grow . Give The Species Excellent , But Gentle Air Movement By Placing Fans Within The Growing Area . Reach Into Your Pockets , Pull Out Some Of The Old Dusty Monies Collected There To Provide Warmth During The Winter Season And Cooling And Humidity During The Summer Season . An Evaporative Cooler During The Summer Season Not Only Cools The Air , But Places Moisture In The Air Which Produces The Humidity Needed For The Species To Live , Grow And Survive .

The Cultivating Factors Mentioned , Within This Section , Are Needed In Order To Cultivate The (18) Species Of Prehistoric Platycerium Ferns . If Any One Of These Factors Are Missing Or Not Given The Species Will Suffer And Not Do Well , Therefore Take A Little Time And Place Energy Into The Cultivating Needs Of Your Platy. Fern Collection And The Species Will Reward You . Nature Has Placed Most Of The Platycerium Ferns In A Tropical Environment To Live And Survive And This Type Of Environment Must Be Reproduced In Order For The Species To Survive And Grow , Within Our Environment .
