This Species Shield Fronds Upper Portion Is Thin And Tall With Very Prominent Veins That Begin At The Growing Bud And Extends Outward To Its Edges . The Upper Portion , Of The Shield Fronds , Resembles A Head Of Romaine Lettuce . The Lower Portion Are Also Thin , But Are Rounded At Their Ends And Have The Same Prominent Veins , Within Them . Neither The Upper Or Lower Portion , Of The Shield Fronds , Can Store Moisture , Within Them . The Platy. Fern Stemaria Will Produce A New Set , Of Shield Fronds , Twice A Year , Early Spring And Early Fall . The Species Enters Into A Dormancy Period That Begins After The New Set , Of Fertile Fronds , Are Produced And Matured And Last Until Early Spring .
